Pets

Even our fur-babies can participate in sustainability.

Other than making sure they like the food, they don't give two poops about where the salmon in their wet food came from, or what their bed is made of.

This is a list of food, treats, and products I buy for them, that I have personally done tons of research on, to make sure it's the best option for their health, and the planet's, while also trying not to break the bank.

I have not received any money for these reviews, or been sent products to review. These are all my (and Indy, O & Sco's) personal opinions.

I and Love and You

Not totally plastic free, but a great pet food brand.

Their headquarters in Boulder, CO is 100% wind powered, and they are founding members of the Pet Industry Sustainability Coalition.

After a lot of research, and looking into raw diets, I feed my cats and dog a mix of wet and dry food.

They don't get enough water in a dry food diet, which leads to kidney problems, and struvite crystals in cats urine.

Bonus, the wet food comes in aluminum (fully recyclable) cans.

Wash Ashore Store

They do beach cleanups, and make leashes out of the rope they find!

You can buy from their online store, Etsy, or in retail stores around the East coast.

After using the leash for 7 months, Indiana chewed through her leash the first time we tried leaving her alone, outside of the crate. The hardware they use is great quality, and they have a return program! I contacted the owner, and mailed back the leash. Because of where she chewed it, he could only make a collar, or short traffic lead (great for tall dogs, not Indy), so they send me a different 3 foot leash!

Pet P.L.A.Y.

They make dog and cat beds, pillows, crate liners, and toys.

They are a B Corp company, based in San Francisco, and the bed filler is made from recycled water bottles!

Personal favorites: the crate liners are great for vet trips, road trips, and making them like napping in the crate. The travel bed (brown, in photo) is great for outdoor seating at restaurants.

I also have 2 large lounge beds; see Mr. Scofield on the large denim dog bed).

**I bought almost all of the beds & crate liners online on black Friday. Saved $$$

No-Hide chew

No-Hide Dog Chews

Most pet stores have a bulk treat and bone section. I was in love with this when we got our dog, and let her pick out pig ears, bones, and biscuits.

Then I learned about how raw hides are made, and that a lot of the formaldehyde free, and chemical free products are packaged, because it's meat without preservatives.

Then I found No-Hide chews. Made in the USA with good ingredients, and plastic free, just the cardboard sleeve in the photo.

Indiana loves them, one smaller bone lasts about 2-3 days, and they come in 4 flavors.

Compostable poop bags

Beware of green washing

This was a tough one. So many companies claim to b green (maybe the cardboard box that the plastic bags come in is recycled), or the bags are just literally green.

Others are made of plastic that has additives so it breaks down into little plastic pieces faster.

Here's some I found that are not made of plastic, and compostable.

Flushable Litter

A must if you keep the litter box in the bathroom... and have a cat.

OkoCat is the only flushable litter I've ever used. Works great, no complaints, and they have lots of different types.

And it comes in a cardboard box!

An-Jan's Bulk Food

I buy the bird food & millet

An-Jan's has an amazing bulk food section. They have some already weighed in paper bags, or byo drawstring bag (they provide plastic bags).

Water Fountain

Our local watering hole, used by all

I bought the PetSafe Drinkwell Pagoda Water fountain for our cats for Christmas (yep, they're spoiled) and found that the typical filter replacements are disposable plastic.

So, I bought this reusable, refillable filter, and fill it with this charcoal.

Finally, here are the foam filter replacements that catch all the fur, and larger dirt/ food bits. You won't replace these every month. Lifespan depends on pet fur, size, and number of animals.

Our cats and dog love it, and prefer it to their backup water bowl.

It holds a lot of water, great for when we leave the cats overnight.

Imperfect

Going Zero waste had a great post about a dog food company with compostable bags. It's a little pricy for me, and I love I and Love and You's business practices.
